Piazza del Duomo Pisa is one of the finest settlements in Italy, a veritable storehouse of famous monuments of the past. Major sights including the cathedral with its Baptistry and Campanelle are in the Piazza del Duomo. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was begun in 1174 as a bell tower for the cathedral. The six-story white marble tower is 54 meters tall and has leaned for centuries. Various architects used columns of differing heights for each story to offset the leaning angles caused by the soft earth.
